U.S. visa photo requirements
Understand current U.S. visa photo composition and digital-image requirements, what a failed DS-160 photo upload means, and what FilexFlow can technically check.
Start with the official photo rules
A visa photo must be recent, in color and composed according to Department of State requirements. For digital images, the official technical page specifies a square aspect ratio, JPEG format and other constraints. Acceptance remains with the U.S. embassy or consulate.
Do not digitally change your appearance
Technical preparation is different from altering the person in the photo. The Department of State says photos must not be digitally enhanced or altered to change appearance. Cropping, sizing and file compression should preserve the image content.
If the DS-160 photo upload fails
Department of State guidance says that when the DS-160 confirmation page shows an X instead of the photo, the upload failed and a compliant printed photo should be submitted according to the embassy or consulate instructions. If the confirmation page includes your photo, the upload succeeded.
