How to prepare a U.S. visa photo at 240 KB or less
Check JPEG format, square dimensions and the 240 KB digital-image limit published by the U.S. Department of State, without changing your appearance.
The measurable digital-image requirements
The Department of State digital-image requirements specify JPEG format, a square aspect ratio, dimensions from 600×600 through 1200×1200 pixels, and a file size of 240 KB or less. Its guidance also says compression may be needed and gives a maximum compression ratio of 20:1.
Reduce file size without changing the person
If your image is over the limit, reduce technical file weight rather than retouching your face. Preserve color and composition. The Department of State warns that photos must not be digitally enhanced or altered to change your appearance.
Check before submitting
A technical check can confirm whether the file is JPEG, whether width equals height, its pixel dimensions and its byte size. Those checks are useful, but they do not replace the official visual review or guarantee acceptance.
