U.S. visa document checklist
Prepare the documents commonly needed for a U.S. nonimmigrant visa, understand what may depend on your case, and check your files before an interview or upload.
Start with the documents that are actually required
For visitor visas, the U.S. Department of State lists a passport valid for travel, the DS-160 confirmation page, the application-fee receipt when payment is required before the interview, and a photo under the applicable rules. Your visa category and the embassy or consulate where you apply can add instructions, so use the official page for your category as the baseline.
Required is not the same as potentially useful
The Department of State says additional documents may be requested to establish the purpose of the trip, your intent to leave the United States after the trip, or your ability to pay the costs. Employment or family ties may be relevant in some cases. That does not make every bank statement, employment letter or itinerary a universal requirement.
Prepare the files as carefully as the paperwork
Before an upload or interview, check that scans are readable, pages are upright, names are understandable, and PDFs are not unnecessarily large. Keep the original document available.
