F-1 student visa document preparation

For F-1 and M-1 student visa interviews, Department of State guidance includes a passport, DS-160 confirmation, fee receipt when applicable, photo, and Form I-20. A consular officer may request additional evidence such as academic preparation, intent to depart after study, and ability to pay education, living and travel costs.

Prepare the document package, not just the PDF

Start with the current instructions for your visa category and the U.S. embassy or consulate where you will apply. Separate universally required items from documents that may be requested based on your case. Then check the files themselves for readable scans, sensible orientation, supported formats and any upload-size limit shown by the receiving portal.

Keep technical preparation separate from eligibility
