F-1 and M-1 student visa document checklist
Prepare the core documents for a U.S. student visa interview, including the I-20, DS-160 confirmation, passport and category-specific supporting evidence.
The I-20 is part of the required document set
For F-1 and M-1 student visas, the Department of State lists the appropriate Form I-20 in addition to the passport, DS-160 confirmation, fee receipt when applicable and photo. Your school issues the I-20 after entering your information in SEVIS.
Have your SEVIS information ready for DS-160
The DS-160 FAQ says F, J and M applicants should have their SEVIS ID and the school or program address available. For F and M students, this information appears on the I-20.
Additional evidence depends on the case
The student-visa process can involve evidence about academic preparation, intent and how educational/living/travel costs will be paid. Follow the current student-visa page and local embassy or consulate instructions rather than treating one checklist as universal.
